Build and design
The Huawei P50 Pro like many high-end devices brings a curvy elegant glass design paired with a metal frame. The most unique design element here is the camera bump. It is divided into two symmetrical circles. The phone also feels quite thin and weighs less than 200 grams. It’s easy to hold in one hand. Plus the P50 Pro is IP68 rated against water and dust. When it comes to audio, the Huawei P50 Pro brings a pair of stereo speakers, which is an upgrade over the Huawei P40 Pro‘s single speaker setup. Its sound is rich, clean, and nicely balanced with pretty good bass.
Cameras
What is the big deal about the cameras of the Huawei P50 Pro? Well, there’s a 50 MP, f/1.8, 23mm (wide), PDAF, Laser AF, OIS main camera, a 64 MP, f/3.5, 90mm (periscope telephoto), PDAF, OIS, 3.5x optical zoom, 7x lossless zoom, a 13 MP, f/2.2, 13mm (ultrawide), AF and a 40 MP, f/1.6, 23mm (B/W), AF. During the day, the main camera takes outstanding 12.5-megapixel photos. Images look balanced and natural with true-to-life colors and just the right amount of sharpening. The main camera is also the primary portrait shooter and its results are brilliant.
The monochrome camera also captures photos in 12.5 megapixels to keep things consistent. Its black and white photos are stunning. Its ultra-wide camera is quite capable during the day with photos that are sharp and detailed enough. P50 Pro’s telephoto camera provides 3.5 times optical zoom. And these 16-megapixel photos are exceptional. The cameras of this phone are compared to those of Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G by Samsung.
Selfies are taken with a 13 MP, f/2.4, (wide), AF front-facing camera which has a wide field of view in the native wide-angle mode. It takes some of the best selfies we’ve reviewed on a phone. They’re incredibly sharp and detailed with accurate colors, super contrast, and great dynamic range. Also, the Huawei P50 Pro can record video and up to 4k with all of its cameras. And electronic stabilization is always on the main camera’s footage. Video quality from the monochrome camera is outstanding. 4k clips from the ultrawide are good too.
OLED Display
On the front of the P50 Pro is a 6.6 inch curved OLED display. It’s high res with a pixel density of 450 PPI. And there’s a fast 120 Hertz refresh rate too. This high refresh rate smooths out motions like swiping and scrolling. It also dials down to 60 Hertz to save energy when you’re not interacting with the screen. There’s also a fast 300 Hertz touch sampling rate. This means the panel is extra responsive. Most gamers are the ones who will enjoy this touch sampling feature.
Present on this phone also is support for 10-bit color and HDR 10 Plus. Color accuracy is excellent. The panel is also brighter than the previous model the Huawei P40 Pro at over 600 nits when using the manual brightness slider. And this can boost up to 750 nits on auto mode and bright conditions. And you get an under-display optical fingerprint scanner which is quite fast and reliable to wake up and unlock the phone.
Platform
When it comes to chipset performance, the Huawei P50 Pro doesn’t disappoint. It boasts a Qualcomm SM8350 Snapdragon 888 4G (5 nm) just like 2021 flagships. But despite this, with the P50 Pro, you don’t get the 5G modem. So connectivity is limited to 4G networks. The interface of this phone is HarmonyOS 2.0 (China), EMUI 12 (Global), no Google Play Services based on Android 11. The layout overall is familiar to Android users. Except that here you get a separate control panel for various settings. What you’re missing here compared to a typical Android phone are Google services. You’ll get something similar through Huawei’s proprietary package.
Probably the thing to miss most here is Google play. You can use Huawei’s app store. Otherwise, you can also sideload the apps through APKs and the search function can directly find the APKs online for you. This phone comes with these storage options: 128GB 8GB RAM, 256GB 8GB RAM, 512GB 8GB RAM, and 512GB 12GB RAM. It is expandable using NM (Nano Memory), up to 256GB (uses shared SIM slot). Its GPU is Mali-G78 MP24 or Adreno 660 depending on the region you buy it.
Battery
For its battery life, the P50 Pro is a Li-Po 4360 mAh, non-removable battery, which is sizable enough. Unlike some other flagship phones, the P50 Pro ships with a 66W charger in the box. You will be able to charge the phone from 0 to 73% in half an hour. And alternatively, you have support for 50W fast wireless charging too.
